The choice of Ponta Delgada to host the gala, which marked the 35th anniversary of the Portuguese-American Leadership Council of the United States (PALCUS), holds particular significance for the Azores, recognizing the archipelago's historical importance in the Portuguese diaspora and the cultural, familial, and emotional ties with communities in North America.
The President of the Ponta Delgada Municipal Council, Pedro Nascimento Cabral, highlighted the event as an "occasion of enormous significance," representing the recognition of a historical connection and reaffirming the diaspora's role in building bridges between Portugal and the United States.
Founded in 1991 in Washington, D.C., PALCUS is a non-profit organization dedicated to representing and advocating for the interests of the Portuguese-American community, promoting civic participation and the appreciation of Portuguese heritage. Over 35 years, it has been active in education, culture, and international relations.
The staging of the Gala in Ponta Delgada provided a meeting space for representatives of the Portuguese-American community and personalities from various sectors, fostering dialogue and identifying new opportunities for transatlantic cooperation. For the Municipality, the initiative reinforced the importance of the diaspora in Azorean identity and the Region's international projection.
Pedro Nascimento Cabral stated that "the Azorean diaspora is one of the greatest strengths of our collective identity" and that it is important to continue valuing this human heritage to transform historical ties into new opportunities for cooperation and development.
The Gala also served to recognize the merit of individuals who have distinguished themselves in affirming the Portuguese-American community and valuing Portuguese heritage. The Municipal Council congratulated those honored at the 2026 edition, considering their careers as inspiring examples.
The vote of congratulation, approved at the meeting on October 28th, acknowledges PALCUS's work and the significance of choosing Ponta Delgada, reinforcing the Azores' centrality in Portuguese-American relations and the municipality as a space for meeting and cooperation.
