The Ponta Delgada Municipal Council celebrated the first year of Pedro Nascimento Cabral's second term with a historic investment of 18 million euros in the construction of 102 new homes, prioritizing housing and the development of the municipality.

In the first year of his second term, the Ponta Delgada Municipal Council has reinforced investment in fundamental areas for citizens' quality of life. Notably, 18 million euros have been allocated to the construction of 102 new homes, a milestone aimed at increasing the municipal housing stock by 44.3%. The focus on Housing, the enhancement of the 24 parishes, support for families, and investment in Education, Culture, Social Action, and Sports mark Ponta Delgada's development strategy.
Pedro Nascimento Cabral, the Mayor, stated that "this first year of the second term allowed us to present the completion of important municipal investments, particularly in the area of Housing, with the construction of 102 new homes. We have sought to transform commitments into concrete responses, reinforcing investment in essential areas for families and the development of the municipality."
The investment in Housing is the largest in the municipality's history, with 450 thousand euros allocated to rent payment support and over 200 thousand euros for interventions in degraded housing. The municipal strategy also includes providing plots for self-build and implementing rent-to-own schemes, aiming to meet the needs of young people and families.
Territorial enhancement is another priority, with approximately 26 million euros for projects and works in the parishes and three million euros channeled to the Parish Councils through Inter-administrative Delegation of Competences Contracts, ensuring greater autonomy and local intervention capacity.
In Education, 2.7 million euros were invested in the new Fenais da Luz School, one million euros in improvements to the school infrastructure, and one million euros for the new university residence accommodating 120 students. Additionally, 680 thousand euros in scholarships were awarded to 469 students.
Culture received an unprecedented investment of three million euros for PDL26 – Portuguese Capital of Culture, two million euros for municipal cultural programming, and 1.4 million euros for the Coliseu Micaelense. In Sports, approximately one million euros was allocated to athletes, clubs, and events, including the construction of the new Santo António Football Field (600 thousand euros) and the Arrifes Kickboxing Club Training Centre (500 thousand euros).
Social Action received around 528 thousand euros transferred to Private Institutions of Social Solidarity (IPSS), 520 thousand euros in social support, and 160 thousand euros for the Municipal Social Solidarity Fund. Furthermore, approximately 450 thousand euros were allocated for new social inclusion initiatives, such as the Social Emergency Centre.
In Environment, 11.5 million euros were allocated for waste collection and urban cleaning, 500 thousand euros for the Official Companion Animal Collection Centre, and 160 thousand euros for environmental awareness actions. For Works and Infrastructure, two million euros were designated for road network redevelopment, one million euros for new parking lots, and another million for garden maintenance.
The reinforcement of civic participation included the establishment of seven Municipal Councils, the MyPolis project, and the 10th edition of the Participatory Budget. Responsible financial management resulted in a positive balance of 1.27 million euros in 2025 and a tax reduction policy with an estimated impact of eight million euros.
“

"This first year demonstrates that it is possible to reconcile public investment, financial responsibility, and tax relief. We want to continue transforming Ponta Delgada, with more housing, better opportunities for young people, greater support for families, and better living conditions in our 24 parishes. This is the commitment we have made and wish to continue fulfilling, with rigor, proximity, and ambition."
