The Mayor of Velas, Catarina Cabeceiras, received deputies from the PSD Azores in the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores for a courtesy meeting at the Paços do Concelho Building. The encounter was part of the Parliamentary Days recently held in São Jorge.
During the meeting, Catarina Cabeceiras highlighted the challenges faced by São Jorge and the municipality of Velas, with a particular focus on health, accessibility, and housing. In the health sector, she acknowledged recent improvements, such as the arrival of more specialist doctors and greater professional stability, but warned about the need to strengthen coordination between health centers and hospitals, as well as the retention of specialized human resources.
Regarding accessibility, the mayor described the issue as an "eternal" one for the island, advocating for an integrated transport system for the Triangle region (São Jorge, Pico, and Faial) through better coordination between sea and air links.
Concerning housing, constraints related to financing programs and the lack of available supply were mentioned, despite investments already made by the municipality in seeking solutions.
Catarina Cabeceiras emphasized the importance of these meetings in bringing local and regional authorities closer, fostering dialogue aimed at improving the population's quality of life through combined efforts.
