On October 1 and 2, 2026, NONAGON – Science and Technology Park of São Miguel, located in Lagoa, hosted the VIII Regional Meeting of the Commissions for the Protection of Children and Young People (CPCJ) of the Autonomous Region of the Azores. The event centered on the future of the child and youth promotion and protection system.
Organized by the Regional Secretariat for Health and Social Security, through the Azores Commissioner for Childhood (CAI), the meeting's central theme was “From Prevention to Intervention: what future for the child and youth promotion and protection system?”. For two days, the event brought together specialists and institutional representatives from various areas, including representatives from CPCJs, the National Commission for the Rights of Children and Young People, the judiciary, local authorities, education, social security, health, and security forces.
The program included the inaugural conference “The Architecture of the Protection and Promotion System: What we have and what we could have”, delivered by psychologist Hélio Bento Ferreira. The Annual Activity Evaluation Report of the CPCJs for 2025 was also presented. The sessions addressed the status of CPCJ members, the challenges of frontline intervention, and the coordination between promotion and protection processes, educational guardianship, and civil guardianship. The development of integrated responses for child crime victims was another highlighted topic.
The meeting served as a platform for sharing experiences and reflecting on the system's challenges, aiming to identify solutions to strengthen prevention, inter-entity coordination, and the safeguarding of the rights and well-being of Azorean children and young people. NONAGON, by hosting this initiative, provided a space for meeting and knowledge sharing among professionals and institutions, fostering a debate of regional relevance and demonstrating the versatility of its infrastructure.
