Following heavy rainfall on October 4, 2026, the municipality of Nelas faced various incidents, including blocked drainage systems, collapsed walls, and fallen trees. The most severe situation occurred at the Nelas School Center, where intense water inflow caused a significant flood within the facilities.
The water reached considerable levels, causing damage to facilities, equipment, and materials, particularly affecting the Kindergarten area, the refectory, and several classrooms. In response to the scale of the incident, the Municipality of Nelas immediately launched an operation for water removal, cleaning, and recovery.
The work, coordinated by the Municipal Civil Protection Service and other entities, involved the Volunteer Firefighters of Nelas and the GNR of Nelas. In just over 24 hours, intensive efforts were made to restore the safety, hygiene, and operational conditions of the school center.
The Municipality expressed gratitude for the support from associations and institutions, highlighting their collaboration in providing meals and logistical support to the teams. Currently, the Municipality is assessing the damages to municipal facilities and infrastructure.
The full operation of the Nelas School Center is guaranteed, ensuring the necessary conditions for the school community.
