The Municipality of Carregal do Sal has launched the “Consultório da Leitura” (Reading Room) project in local health units to encourage reading and improve the user experience.

The Educational Support Office (GAE) and the Municipal Library of Carregal do Sal, in collaboration with the USF Carregal do Sal and USF Carregal do Sal – Polo Cabanas de Viriato, have implemented the “Consultório da Leitura” initiative. The program aims to stimulate reading habits, facilitate access to information, and make waiting times at health facilities more pleasant and enriching for patients and their companions.
A diverse selection of books, magazines, newsletters, and informational brochures about the region's tourist attractions and cultural heritage is now available. The goal is for users to utilize their waiting time to engage with the world of reading and gain a better understanding of Carregal do Sal.
This initiative seeks to provide a distinct experience within healthcare settings, promoting the joy of reading, access to knowledge, and the appreciation of local culture. Reading during a wait can help reduce anxiety and foster personal and social development among citizens.
Reading materials can be freely consulted on shelves. Borrowing works requires filling out a registration form, and items can be loaned for home reading with a commitment to return. The selection is periodically updated to ensure a variety of content.
The “Consultório da Leitura” aims to humanize the waiting areas at the Health Units of Carregal do Sal and Cabanas de Viriato, promoting well-being, reading habits, and the appreciation of knowledge and local heritage. This collaborative effort between institutions underscores a commitment to literacy, citizenship, and the population's quality of life.
