The Municipality of Carregal do Sal marked Food Week, from October 12 to 19, with a series of food education activities aimed at the entire school community and participants of the «Diabetes in Motion» project.

The initiative's objective was to raise awareness about the importance of healthy and sustainable eating habits through practical activities, learning moments, and awareness campaigns in school and community settings.
In preschool education establishments, children participated in an activity about food myths, led by the mascots Horta and Liça from the PNAES – Identidade Alimentar em Viseu Dão Lafões project, receiving stickers with the message «I am a Food Champion». In the 1st cycle, students received stickers with the phrase «Eating Healthy is Fun».
Activities extended to school canteens, with visits from the mascot Horta, space decoration, and the provision of flavored waters. At the Municipal Nursery, mascot Liça engaged children in a playful way about the importance of a balanced diet. In primary and secondary schools, a themed alphabet soup about food was distributed.
The program also included a lecture at Mercado D’Ideias, themed “Demystifying Label Reading,” for participants of the «Diabetes in Motion» project. The session aimed to enhance the ability to interpret nutritional information on food products.
The mascots Horta and Liça are part of the PNAES – Identidade Alimentar em Viseu Dão Lafões project, which promotes healthy and sustainable eating habits, values local and seasonal products, encourages the Mediterranean Diet, and raises awareness about food waste prevention, with a focus on schools.
Food Week thus reinforced the importance of food education from childhood, involving schools, children, students, and the community in initiatives that contribute to healthier choices and greater awareness of the impact of food on health and the environment.
