This collaboration involves the Municipal Civil Protection Service and aims to prepare the territory and protect the population. The initiative includes the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030), promoted by the United Nations, the Sendai Stakeholder Engagement Mechanism, the Network of Resilient Cities of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP), and the Working Group on Security and Civil Protection of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML).
Participation in these structures enhances institutional cooperation, knowledge sharing, and coordination between different intervention levels. The goal is to align international commitments and guidelines with the territory's reality, helping to reduce vulnerabilities and protect people, property, and the environment.
Internationally, MCR2030 promotes urban resilience, while the Sendai Stakeholder Engagement Mechanism focuses on involving entities in implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. National and metropolitan structures complement this work by fostering cooperation and experience exchange among municipalities.
For the Municipality of Montijo, this commitment translates into continuous work on risk prevention, identification, and assessment, preparing stakeholders and communities, and improving the capacity to anticipate and respond to emergency situations.
Building a more resilient territory requires planning, capacity building, and integrating risk reduction into local development decisions. The municipality views civil protection as a strategic function for collective security and sustainability.
