The event, taking place between 9:30 AM and 1:00 PM at the Auditório Fórum Trofa XXI, will gather specialists, representatives of public institutions, researchers, and local officials to discuss the challenges and strategies for the conservation and recovery of riparian ecosystems.
The first panel, titled “Strategies and Policies in the Conservation and Restoration of Ecosystems,” will address national policies for water resources and the Ave River, the National Nature Restoration Plan, and nature-based solutions for restoring watercourses. Speakers will include José Pimenta Machado (Portuguese Environment Agency), Sandra Sarmento (Nature and Forest Conservation Institute), and Pedro Teiga (University of Porto).
The Strategic Plan for the Recovery of the Leça River 2020/2030, promoted by the Association of Municipalities of the Leça River Corridor, will also be presented, with an intervention by Artur Branco (Association of Municipalities) and moderation by Rui Cortes (University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro).
The second panel, “The Future of the Ave River: Rehabilitation and Improvement of Ecosystem Quality,” will focus on the environmental recovery and valorization of the territory. A round table will bring together Isabel Cruz (Councillor of the Trofa Municipal Council), Vânia Marçal (Councillor of the Famalicão Municipal Council), Ana Maria Ferreira (Councillor of the Santo Tirso Municipal Council), and Carla Peixoto (Councillor of the Vila do Conde Municipal Council), moderated by Aníbal Coelho (Invited Professor at the University of Aveiro).
Through this initiative, the Municipality of Trofa aims to foster knowledge sharing and reflection on the importance of riparian ecosystems, encouraging cooperation among municipalities, institutions, the scientific community, and other environmental entities.
