Armando Mansilha, a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), has been awarded the prestigious Ratschow Memorial Medal. This accolade is granted annually by the Curatorium Angiologiae Internationalis to scientists distinguished for their scientific contributions in the field of vascular medicine and related disciplines. The medal was presented during the 68th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Phlebology and Lymphology, held from September 9th to 12th in Weimar, Germany.
The FMUP professor expressed feeling “privileged” by the honor, highlighting that this marks the first time a Portuguese individual has received this distinction. On the occasion, Armando Mansilha was also invited to deliver a lecture on the topic “Planning, strategy, hemodynamics and technical skills to treat recurrent varicose veins”.
The Ratschow Memorial Medal, awarded annually since 1969, was established in memory of Max Ratschow, considered the “father” of Angiology. It is currently presented by the Curatorium Angiologiae Internationalis. Armando Mansilha also serves as the president of the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS), the representative scientific society for European vascular surgeons.
In addition to his teaching activities at FMUP and clinical practice as head of the Angiology and Vascular Surgery Department at ULS São João, Armando Mansilha is responsible for the European Vascular Surgery Examinations and serves as editor-in-chief of International Angiology.
