FCUP Debates Science for Social Good and Celebrates 115 Years

The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) held a round table on October 1st titled “Science for Social Good”, gathering faculty to discuss scientific impact on society, culminating in the institution's 115th anniversary celebrations.

The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) hosted, on October 1st, a round table discussion on the theme “Science for Social Good”, bringing together faculty members from various departments and units of the institution. The session, held in the faculty's Library, was opened by Ana Cristina Freire, director of FCUP, who spoke about the role of Science and its teaching in building more just and democratic societies.
Moderated by António Machiavelo, FCUP's Pro-Director for Science and Culture, the conversation focused on concrete examples of scientific innovations that have contributed to societal improvement. Helena Sant’Ovaia, a professor from the Department of Geosciences, Environment and Spatial Planning, highlighted the monitoring of volcanic eruptions, which allows for prediction and timely evacuation of people.
José Melo Ferreira, a lecturer from the Department of Biology, mentioned the importance of DNA studies for identifying species. Miriam Santos, a professor from the Department of Computer Science, recalled the evolution of facial recognition and its biases, while Nuno Mateus, a lecturer from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, discussed the role of these fields in reducing environmental impact. Rita Gaio, a professor from the Department of Mathematics, explained how the Central Limit Theorem enables the calculation of disease risks and testing of treatments based on population data.
Carla Morais, an FCUP lecturer representing the Science Teaching Unit, emphasized the progress made in democratizing scientific education and co-creation processes. The audience interacted, contributing further examples from various scientific fields for individual and collective well-being.
“Science for Social Good” also serves as the starting point for the celebration of FCUP Day 2026, which on October 14th marks the 115th anniversary of the Faculty of Sciences, with a special program dedicated to the theme.
