The Baião Senior University (USB) has commenced a new academic year, introducing new disciplines and a diverse range of activities. To mark the start, the Councilor for Health and Quality of Life of the Baião Municipal Council, Olívia Mendes, visited the campuses in Baião and Santa Marinha do Zêzere on September 29th, where she interacted with students, teachers, and staff.
During the visit, Olívia Mendes highlighted the participants' role in building an increasingly dynamic and participatory Senior University. The councilor left a message of encouragement, stating, "Each user of the Baião Senior University, by choosing to be here, sets a true life lesson and demonstrates that active aging is the path to a fairer, healthier, and more humane society. The Senior University is yours: it is a space for sharing memories, but above all, for creating new projects, new experiences, and new friendships."
The councilor wished "an excellent academic year" to all students and thanked the teachers and staff "for their commitment, sensitivity, and dedication" in developing the USB's activities.
This academic year, the USB is introducing novelties such as Ceramics and Modeling, Decorative Arts, Art History/Painting, and Boccia. Disciplines like Yoga, Local History and Literature, Walking Football, Handicrafts, Hydro-gymnastics, History of Religions, Health 65+, Safe Life – Learning with the Firefighters, TUNA, and Gymnastics and Ballroom Dancing remain. This diversity allows participants to choose from activities related to arts, culture, history, physical activity, health, and safety, combining learning with social interaction.
Enrollment for the Baião Senior University is open and can be done in person at the António Mota Municipal Library or at the Decentralized Services of Santa Marinha do Zêzere. Further information can be obtained by calling 255 540 556 or via email at universidade.senior@cm-baiao.pt.
The USB operates with two campuses, in Baião and Santa Marinha do Zêzere, but is open to all seniors in the municipality of Baião, regardless of their parish of residence. More than a space dedicated to learning, the Senior University establishes itself as a meeting point for the senior population, promoting sharing, socializing, participation, and the creation of new experiences and friendships.
