“"This is the concrete dimension of European funds: transforming investment into more qualified, sustainable, and accessible spaces, with a direct impact on people's lives and the future of territories. The Tagus Estuary Riverside Linear Park demonstrates that valuing biodiversity and natural heritage can go hand in hand with quality of life and a new way of experiencing the territory, serving as an example of how coordination between entities and European investment can contribute to transforming territories."

The Municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, with support from the Lisbon Regional Program (Lisboa 2030), has completed the requalification of five kilometers of riverfront between Alverca do Ribatejo and Sobralinho.
The intervention, covering approximately 14 hectares, aims to bring people closer to the Tagus River, promoting the conservation of nature, biodiversity, and natural heritage. The new space includes pedestrian and cycling paths, areas for rest and contemplation, and the 'Passadiços dos Salgados' (Salgados Boardwalks), dedicated to nature observation.
International recognition came in June 2026, when the Municipality was awarded the 'Green and Inclusive City of the Year' prize at the InGreen City Awards for its work in regenerating the riverfront, with the Tagus Estuary Riverside Linear Park as a central element.
With a total investment of 8.59 million euros, of which 3.44 million were financed by the ERDF through Lisboa 2030, the project exemplifies how cooperation between entities and European funding can generate concrete benefits for people, nature, and the future of territories.
