The Metropolitan Plan for Climate Change Adaptation of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML), which aims to build a more resilient and future-ready metropolis, has reached finalist status in the “Portugal + Green” category of the 2nd edition of the European Funds Awards. This distinction recognizes projects funded by the European Union for their contribution to the economic, social, and environmental development of territories.
The application, which highlighted the plan's transformative dimension by aligning the 18 municipalities around a shared vision and integrating climate adaptation into land-use planning, was presented during the 3rd European Funds Showcase at the Lisbon Congress Centre. Metropolitan Secretary Cristina Escórcio emphasized that the nomination represents significant recognition of the work developed by AML and its municipalities to prepare the region for the impacts of climate change.
The plan, more than a strategic document, has created tools to support concrete decisions, with objectives such as protecting people and property from climate risks and strengthening the adaptive capacity of territories. It also served as a scientific basis for subsequent applications for community funds, focusing on interventions like flood retention basins and urban green corridors.
This recognition adds to the “Mediterranean Climate Change Adaptation Awards” in 2021, reinforcing the pioneering dimension of a project that places inter-municipal cooperation at the service of climate action and has the potential for transfer to other metropolitan areas.
