The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon marked European Statistics Day on October 20th, bringing together over 300 primary and secondary school students for activities including scientific outreach, lectures, and a debate on the future of statistical training.

The initiative, organized by the Department of Mathematical Sciences, the Portuguese Statistical Society, and the Centre for Statistics and Applications of the University of Lisbon (CEAUL), aimed to showcase applications of Statistics and discuss the field's challenges in the era of data science and artificial intelligence.
During the morning, the interactive exhibition Explorística, in collaboration with the National Statistics Institute, and three lectures explored the application of Statistics in areas such as dinosaur studies, risk analysis, and football. At the welcome session, Professor José Afonso, Vice-Dean of CIÊNCIAS, highlighted the area's importance for understanding the world and anticipating scenarios, stating that "Statistics is the science of being able to predict when we do not know."
