The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, marked World Teachers' Day with a message of appreciation to all educators teaching in Portuguese schools and teaching the Portuguese language worldwide. The date coincides with the celebration of the Republic, a value that, according to the President, is reflected in schools and the promise of equal treatment they represent.
De Sousa emphasized that school is where human potential is recognized and developed, even in the face of difficulties. Teachers are described as those who encourage, open horizons, and provide confidence, tools, and freedom to imagine futures. "Valuing our teachers is valuing our own Republic," he stated.
The President recalled the events of October 5, 1910, the date of the Proclamation of the Republic, and the vision of its founders that the country's transformation would come through education. He reiterated Portugal's commitment to its future through education, acknowledging the adversities in teaching but valuing the invaluable contribution of teachers to the country it is today and to the one it aims to build.
The message concluded with the assertion that "There is no Republic without schools. There is no school without valued teachers," reinforcing the idea that caring for teachers means caring for the nation's future.
