The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Margarida Balseiro Lopes, on Friday called for technological transformation to respect the work and value of creators. The statement was made at the opening of the round table “Creating in Portuguese: Copyright, Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Cultural and Creative Industries”.
The initiative, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, included the participation of the Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Daren Tang, and brought together sector representatives and national creators to discuss the impact of artificial intelligence.
“We need to seize the opportunities that technology offers us, but also ensure that technological transformation does not happen at the expense of those who create,” stated Margarida Balseiro Lopes. The Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring “transparency in the use of works, identification of rights holders, adequate licensing, and fair remuneration”.
The debate focused on creation in the Portuguese language. The Government advocates for strengthening cooperation with CPLP countries on Copyright and Related Rights, aiming for the digital circulation of Portuguese culture to generate value for its producers. “It is not just about protecting what already exists. We also need to create conditions for creation to continue,” the Minister added.
The session, held behind closed doors in the Sala dos Embaixadores of the National Palace of Ajuda, was attended by representatives from CPLP, APEL, AUDIOGEST, GDA, GEDIPE, SPA, and VISAPRESS, as well as creators Edgar Pêra, Filipe Melo, and Inês Cardoso (Carincur), and officials from GEPAC, IGAC, and INPI.
