The opening session was attended by the President of the Faculty, Professor Pedro Passos, and Professor Maria do Céu Patrão Neves, Full Professor at the University of the Azores and President of the National Council of Ethics for Life Sciences. The latter discussed the origins of ethics committees, describing their emergence as a response to social demands that evolved «from the bottom up» to their institutionalization.
The Vice-Rector of the University of Lisbon, João Peixoto, closed the event, considered of great importance for FMH, given the nature of the research developed at the institution, which involves human subjects.
Established in 2012, the FMH Ethics Committee for Research has been fundamental in promoting ethical reflection and the assessment of research projects. The organized conferences provide an opportunity to discuss current challenges in research ethics and reinforce the role of ethics committees in the academic and scientific context.
