The Stroke Unit (UAVC) of ULS Amadora/Sintra marks World Stroke Day on October 29th with a series of prevention and awareness initiatives, under the global theme "Every Minute Counts".

Stroke remains the leading cause of death and disability in Portugal, making it crucial to emphasize prevention and prompt treatment. In response to the challenge from the Portuguese Stroke Society, the UAVC of ULS Amadora/Sintra is organizing activities on October 26th, 27th, and 28th to alert users and professionals to the signs and consequences of stroke.
On October 26th and 28th, during the morning, the “UAVC Movement Sessions” will take place at the Green Gym of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (MFR) and in the Stroke Unit's space. These sessions are for patients admitted to the UAVC and other inpatient services undergoing rehabilitation, simulating daily tasks through group activities and defined circuits.
On October 27th, the atrium of Hospital Fernando Fonseca will host the “Stroke Glory Game”, a fun educational activity for users, professionals, and visitors. Participants will navigate through stages related to approaching a stroke patient, covering warning signs, response actions, rehabilitation, life after stroke, and the identification and control of vascular risk factors, including screening.
The event involves multidisciplinary participation from professionals of the Stroke Unit, the MFR Service, and the Social Services and Nutrition departments. The rehabilitation team (Physiatry, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy) and the medical and nursing teams of the UAVC will lead the activities.
