The Polytechnic University of Guarda (UPG) participated in Biomeet 2026, the largest national biotechnology gathering, held at TagusPark, in Oeiras, on September 23rd and 24th. The participation aimed to showcase technologies developed at the institution and foster its connection with the business community.

The event, which took place on September 23rd and 24th, brought together researchers, companies, startups, and investors from the biotechnology sector, providing a platform for knowledge sharing and networking. UPG's participation was part of the INOVC+ project – Intelligent Innovation Ecosystem of the Central Region, aiming to promote its technologies and strengthen the link between scientific research and its practical application.
UPG's presence was represented by the Research Unit (UDI) BRIDGES – Biotechnology Research for Innovation and DesiGn of HEalth ProductS, in collaboration with the Technology Transfer and Knowledge Valorization Office. Two patented technologies with potential in the health sector were presented: Multifunctional Dressings for Chronic Wound Treatment and a Gel Formulation for Drug Intoxication Treatment, along with the process for their production.
The University gained particular prominence in the Flash Presentations at Biomeet 2026, being one of only two higher education institutions to present innovative projects and solutions to the biotechnology community. The presentation was led by lecturer and researcher Sónia Miguel, focusing on “Multifunctional Dressings for Chronic Wound Treatment”.
Chronic wounds pose a significant challenge to healthcare systems due to the high risk of infection and prolonged healing. UPG's work aims to go beyond the physical protection of conventional dressings by integrating monitoring, diagnostic, and therapeutic functionalities. The ColorWound technology, for instance, incorporates a pH sensor in an adhesive film that, through a visible color change, allows for simple and non-invasive monitoring of the wound's status.
Participation in Biomeet 2026, supported by the INOVC+ project, enhanced the visibility of UDI BRIDGES' technologies, facilitated networking with biotechnology sector stakeholders, and identified potential collaboration and technology transfer opportunities, thereby strengthening the connection between research and innovation in health and biotechnology.
