The Faro Municipal Council has established an Advisory Committee for the Alameda 21 project, which aims to create a new public enjoyment space adjacent to the Ribeira das Lavadeiras, in Quinta da Penha.

The planned intervention in the area adjacent to the Ribeira das Lavadeiras, in Quinta da Penha, aims to create a new public enjoyment space, enhancing the environmental and landscape characteristics of the territory. The Advisory Committee, comprising personalities and entities with relevant knowledge and experience in similar interventions, including representatives from the Order of Engineers, the Order of Architects, and the University of the Algarve, has already held its first meetings on October 8 and 9.
The site, currently occupied by an orchard, possesses relevant environmental and territorial characteristics, being covered by the National Agricultural Reserve (RAN) and the National Ecological Reserve (REN), due to the presence of a watercourse. The Municipality intends for the future Alameda 21 to become a public green and leisure area, offering new conditions for the population's enjoyment and integrating spaces and equipment to support physical and sports activities, always with a focus on environmental and landscape valorization and public space qualification.
Given the importance and sensitivity of the site, and the need for a multidisciplinary approach from the initial phases, the Municipality decided to create this Advisory Committee. The Committee includes participation from public entities with responsibilities in the intervention area, such as the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR Algarve), the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), the Institute for Nature Conservation (ICNF), and FAGAR, among other relevant entities.
The structure aims to promote joint and interdisciplinary reflection, incorporating technical and institutional contributions from the outset and ensuring coordination with territorial management instruments, environmental constraints, and existing infrastructures. Through this committee, the Municipality intends for the Alameda 21 Project to be developed with an integrated vision, valuing existing natural heritage and reconciling environmental protection with the creation of new public enjoyment opportunities.
The participation of specialists, academic institutions, professional orders, and public entities will contribute to defining the project's guiding principles, promoting a technically sound, environmentally responsible solution that meets the current and future needs of the city. Alameda 21 aims to strengthen the offer of green spaces and leisure in Faro, creating a new space for meeting, recreation, and outdoor activity, while simultaneously contributing to the environmental and landscape valorization of the Quinta da Penha area. The Municipality will continue the project's development in articulation with partners, seeking a shared and integrated vision for this territory.
