With the aim of bringing sport closer to the community, the Bike Fun Marathon initiative offered routes of five, ten, and twenty-one kilometers, adapted to different participation levels. The competitive spirit gave way to camaraderie, allowing families and groups of friends to enjoy the city on two wheels.
Integrated into the official program of Albufeira European City of Sport 2026 and supported by the Albufeira Municipal Council, the race took place under the motto “Pedaling together safely”. Physical activity filled the streets, providing a leisure experience shared by people of various ages.
Age and nationality diversity marked this first edition. The youngest cyclist was 5 years old and the oldest, 78, illustrating the event's intergenerational character. Parents, children, and grandparents cycled side-by-side, with the common goal of enjoying the route and reaching the finish line together. Women represented 40% of the participants, and the presence of 17 nationalities highlighted the diversity of the community residing in the municipality.
The president of the Albufeira Municipal Council, Rui Cristina, and councilwoman Maria Cristina Corado were present. Rui Cristina emphasized the importance of sport in bringing generations together and creating opportunities for encounters in the city, reinforcing the goal that Albufeira European City of Sport should be reflected in the daily lives of the population, with accessible activities close to families.
The Clube Desportivo Areias São João and the Clube BTT Amigos de Albufeira also joined the initiative, highlighting the contribution of local associations in promoting sports practice and community involvement.
To ensure the safety and circulation of participants, temporary traffic restrictions were implemented. Safety was a central element, allowing families to share the road and fully enjoy the experience.
