The ceremony was attended by senior officials from CCDR Alentejo, including Vice-President Roberto Grilo, director Gonçalo Costa, and division head Jacinta Grilo, highlighting the entity's close support in realizing crucial investments for the region's economic and sustainable development.
The issuance of these permits marks a significant administrative step towards the realization of two foundational projects focused on the energy transition, economic decarbonization, and the development of the renewable hydrogen sector in Portugal.
The MadoquaPower2X (MP2X) project, promoted by MADOQUAPOWER2X, S.A., involves the installation of a green hydrogen production unit in ZILS, with an installed capacity of 500 MW. Recognized as a Project of Potential National Interest (PIN), this investment of approximately 2.8 billion euros aims to enhance energy independence, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and establish Sines as a strategic hub for the hydrogen economy.
Complementarily, the MADOQUA NH3 project, also with PIN status, includes the installation of a green ammonia production unit. Powered by renewable hydrogen from the MP2X project, the unit will have an estimated investment of around 526 million euros and the capacity to produce approximately 438,000 tons of renewable ammonia annually, intended for export and use as low-carbon maritime fuel.
Ricardo Pinheiro emphasized the importance of these investments for the future of Alentejo, highlighting the region's role in achieving national and European decarbonization and clean energy production goals. The delivery of the digital permits further strengthens territorial competitiveness and consolidates Sines as a European energy transition hub.
Both projects align with the National Hydrogen Strategy, the National Energy and Climate Plan 2030, and European carbon neutrality objectives, contributing to the development of new sustainable industries and the creation of skilled employment in the region.
