The Metropolitan Region of Coimbra is part of the European DICORE project, funded by the Interreg VI-A Spain-Portugal Program, which uses data and artificial intelligence to modernize the planning of separate waste collection.

The DICORE project focuses on using data, algorithms, and artificial intelligence to support crucial decisions such as container placement, installed capacity, collection frequency, route organization, and identifying adjustment needs in existing systems. The goal is to promote more efficient and sustainable management, adapted to the specific characteristics of each territory.
The municipalities of Góis and Oliveira do Hospital have been selected as pilot territories within the Metropolitan Region of Coimbra. These locations will allow testing the future tool in distinct contexts, covering both areas of lower population density and varied urban and rural characteristics.
The DICORE platform, which will be open access, aims to assist municipal services in analyzing detailed information. This includes data on population, urban configuration, waste production, container locations, routes, and collection frequencies. Based on this analysis, it is expected to improve the organization of selective collection and support more informed decision-making.
The project involves collaboration with Portuguese and Spanish entities with extensive experience in waste management, technological innovation, and digital development. Partners include SADECO, the University of Salamanca, Porto Ambiente, and the Metropolitan Region of Coimbra.
Through this participation, the Municipality of Oliveira do Hospital, along with project partners, reaffirms its commitment to digital transition, the circular economy, and improving the efficiency of public services, driving innovative solutions for municipalities and their populations.
