The Municipal Museum Santos Rocha (MMSR) organized commented tours of the Northern Cemetery of Figueira da Foz on October 17 and 18, as part of the 5th National Cultural Week in Cemeteries.

The Northern Cemetery, a 19th-century romantic space undergoing classification as a Municipal Interest Ensemble, was presented as a site of artistic and human heritage, holding individual stories that form the city's collective memory.
The tours, guided by MMSR technicians José Santos Silva and Marta Fernandes, attracted around 30 participants. The route allowed attendees to learn about the cemetery's historical evolution and its significant historical, artistic, symbolic, and architectural heritage, focusing on approximately 20 selected tombs out of 100 studied.
With historical roots dating back to the context of the last French invasion, the cemetery evolved over time, becoming a place representing the economic power and prestige of prominent Figueira da Foz families. The artistic and architectural richness of the tombs, many designed as symbols of social distinction by renowned builders and architects, reflects the evolution of artistic tastes of the era.
Through these monuments, some of the main families of Figueira da Foz, their life paths, and their role in the city's history were presented. The symbolism of funerary art, characteristic of romantic cemeteries, was also discussed, explaining the meaning of various decorative and sculptural elements.
These guided tours have valued and promoted a often-unknown heritage, highlighting the Northern Cemetery as a site of historical, artistic, and cultural interest, and a preserver of the city's collective memory. The initiative reinforces the MMSR's role in heritage valorization and community engagement.
