The initiative, led by visual artist Babu (Hamilton Francisco), complemented the exhibition «Geometrias de Pedra – A Calçada Portuguesa da Figueira da Foz», on display at the museum until January 2027. The workshops offered direct contact with the techniques and knowledge associated with this art form, highlighting its artistic dimension and heritage value.
The program also included a guided tour of the Bairro Novo, where participants could discover and interpret pavement patterns designed by João Abel Manta, showcasing the relationship between the urban space, artistic creation, and heritage.
On Thursday, October 15th, two 11th-year classes from the Arts Course at Escola Secundária Joaquim de Carvalho participated in this experience, introducing young people to an artistic expression that is important to preserve.
The Municipality of Figueira da Foz, in partnership with the Associação da Calçada Portuguesa (ACP), reaffirms its commitment to valuing and safeguarding this heritage. The collaboration aims to create regular opportunities for engagement with Portuguese pavement art.
As part of the «MÃOS SÁBIAS» project, developed by the Educational and Cultural Mediation Service of the Municipal Museum Santos Rocha and supported by the National Arts Plan, the municipality will continue to promote educational and cultural mediation initiatives. The project includes the «Geometrias de Pedra» exhibition and activities for various audiences, especially younger ones.
Portuguese pavement is described as a living heritage, embodying identity, memory, and artistic expression. The partnership between the Municipality and the ACP reinforces the commitment to promoting this art and the work of pavement artisans, ensuring its craftsmanship is passed on to future generations.
