The Mayor of Braganza Municipality, Isabel Ferreira, attended a session of the European Week of Regions and Cities in Brussels on October 13. The debate, titled "The right to stay: keeping our mountains alive, dynamic, accessible and inhabited", focused on the challenges faced by mountain and low-density regions.
The initiative was part of the reflection process for the future strategy of the European Commission, aimed at territories experiencing population loss and difficulties in retaining residents. The session brought together political and technical representatives from various European regions, including Portugal, Italy, France, Romania, and Poland.
The upcoming “Right to Stay” Strategy is being prepared by DG-REGIO (Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy) with the aim of addressing the difficulties faced by territories experiencing population outflow and limitations in accessing essential services.
“"It is a privilege for Braganza to participate in this debate and contribute to a European strategy that will consider low-density territories like ours. The “Right to Stay” must translate into effective conditions for people to live in these territories with access to employment, services, and opportunities."
