Beatriz Sofia Correia has been announced as the winner of the 2026 Alberto Sampaio History Prize, recognized for her work titled “Punitive Law on Conjugal Violence in the Diocese of Coimbra during the First Half of the 18th Century: from theory to practice”.
The award ceremony is scheduled for December 1st in Braga. The date coincides with the anniversary of the death of Alberto Sampaio, which occurred in 1908. The detailed ceremony program will be released later.
The jury, under the scientific direction of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon, praised the solidity and scientific quality of Correia's work, considering it a significant contribution to understanding the condition of women in the late Modern Era. They also highlighted the high general quality of the submitted works.
Established in 1995 and renewed in 2016, the Alberto Sampaio History Prize aims to honor the figure and work of Alberto Sampaio, promoting studies in Social and Economic History. Current founders include the Municipalities of Guimarães, Vila Nova de Famalicão, Braga, and the Sociedade Martins Sarmento.
