The collection, comprising 27 bound volumes and owned by Fernanda Amândio, will be integrated into the Municipal Library's archives. Founded in Esposende in 1917 by João Amândio, "O Cávado" newspaper was a reference publication in local and regional press for much of the 20th century, covering the political, social, economic, and cultural life of the municipality and region.
Following João Amândio's death in 1948, the direction and editing continued within the family, notably with José Bernardino Amândio, who carried on the legacy. The publication expanded its regional reach, also being printed in Barcelos and Braga.
This historical collection is of great interest to researchers, students, and the general public, fulfilling a long-standing aspiration to have the complete collection of this newspaper at the Municipal Library, similar to "O Esposendense" and "O Povo Esposendense".
Historical editions and commemorative publications of "O Cávado" are already preserved at the Municipal Library and the Digital Library of Cávado. With this acquisition, the Municipality of Esposende aims to preserve and value the municipal documentary heritage, ensuring the conservation and public access to a testament of local history.
The collection will be available for consultation in physical format at the Municipal Library and in digital format through the AquaLibri platform – Digital Library of Cávado.
