Over 300 athletes from various clubs of the Associação de Basquetebol de Braga participated on October 5th in the sports season opening ceremony, promoted by the ABB with the support of the Município de Celorico de Basto and the Basket Clube de Celorico de Basto. The event took place at the gimnodesportivo de Celorico de Basto, aiming to foster camaraderie and interaction among athletes from the U-10 and U-12 categories.
The initiative marked the start of the new sports season and highlighted the growth of basketball in the municipality, a result of the local council's efforts in promoting sports. The Mayor of Celorico de Basto, José Peixoto Lima, emphasized the sport's dynamism and the mobilization of local clubs to attract young players.
The mayor stressed that basketball's growth stems from a municipal strategy focused on creating access to sports for all children and young people, promoting equal opportunities and healthy lifestyles. "Investing in facilities, clubs, sports associations, and the training of our youth is investing in the future of the municipality," he stated.
José Peixoto Lima thanked the athletes, families, and participating clubs, reinforcing the importance of these initiatives in establishing Celorico de Basto as a venue for major sporting events, which also boosts the local economy through visitor spending.
The event also included the presence of the ABB Vice-President of the Board, Pedro Pinheiro, and ABB Technical Director, José Gomes, on a day dedicated to sports and the promotion of youth basketball.
