An exploratory project launched on September 11 unites Águas do Douro e Paiva and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) to investigate waste valorization.

The project aims to investigate innovative proposals for iron recovery and transform waste generated at the Castelo de Paiva Water Treatment Plant (ETA) into resources with potential value for various industrial sectors. Led by researcher Rui Ribeiro, the study will assess the potential for reusing sludge formed during water treatment in new industrial applications, due to the high iron content resulting from the use of ferric chloride as a coagulant.
On September 17, Rui Ribeiro visited the Castelo de Paiva ETA, where he learned about the water treatment process presented by Águas do Douro e Paiva staff. An initial sludge sample was collected for preliminary laboratory tests, and three possible research approaches for sludge valorization were discussed.
This study exemplifies the company's commitment to innovation and sustainability, seeking to reduce the environmental and economic impact of landfilling sludge produced at this ETA and to pave the way for new circular economy solutions.
The project will run between September 2026 and June 2027, culminating in the presentation of results at the Annual FEUP Prime Partner Event. This initiative, part of the FEUP Prime program, aims to strengthen collaboration between partner companies and early-career researchers from FEUP, addressing concrete organizational challenges through short-term projects.
As part of this initiative, AdDP staff submitted research topic proposals in May. The valorization of waste at the Castelo de Paiva ETA was selected for its innovation potential and applicability.
