Bussaco once again became a stage for History, memory, and encounter between peoples during the commemorations of the 216th anniversary of the Battle of Bussaco, which concluded on Sunday, September 27. The event brought together approximately 240 reenactors from 17 groups from Portugal, Ireland, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
At the opening on Saturday, September 26, António Jorge Franco, president of the Municipal Chamber of Mealhada, highlighted the European dimension of the gathering. "Today, 216 years later, Bussaco once again brings Europeans together. But this time, not to fight. To remember, to share History, and to celebrate what unites us," he stated.
Franco emphasized that historical reenactment transforms "a war episode into a moment of encounter between peoples," making Bussaco "much more than a place of national memory": a true "place of European memory." He also argued that knowing Europe's History means understanding the interconnectedness of different countries' pasts and how many events that shaped nations transcended borders.
Throughout the weekend, two historical reenactment moments took place: one in Luso on Saturday, with the reconstruction of the combat, and another near the Obelisk on Sunday, with the reenactment of Marshal Ney's column's assault, bringing the public closer to the atmosphere experienced during the Battle.
The closing featured an evocative session promoted by the Portuguese Army. Retired Infantry Colonel Américo Henriques highlighted the importance of the Battle of Bussaco in Portuguese Military History, considering it "the most important of all battles on Portuguese territory" and a moment that defended Portugal's independence.
Américo Henriques drew a connection between the memory of Bussaco and the contemporary world, arguing that the values of History and the Homeland remain relevant. "If we look at the current turbulent world, we see that all the values of the Homeland must be called upon in the present," he said, addressing a message to new generations about the importance of people in defending territory.
The closing address reinforced the message that Bussaco is a place where History meets the present, and an old battle can today be transformed into a moment of encounter, knowledge, and affirmation of peace among European peoples.
The commemorations, part of the Mondego-Bussaco strategy (integrating the Municipalities of Mealhada, Mortágua, and Penacova), also included a gastronomy workshop at the Restaurante Pedagógico da Escola Profissional Vasconcellos Lebre, promoted by Turismo de Portugal / Escola de Hotelaria e Turismo de Coimbra.
On Sunday afternoon, the book "Do Vimeiro para a Glória - O Regimento de Infantaria 19 na Guerra Peninsular", by Alexandre Carvalho, was presented, along with the Rota do Bussaco, a project uniting the three municipalities in the joint valorization of the territory and its historical heritage.
