The Ponta Delgada City Council has announced an increased investment in housing, aiming to expand the supply and diversify solutions for young people, families, and workers in the municipality.

The municipal strategy involves continuing current investments and preparing new initiatives to facilitate access to adequate housing. These include the construction of public housing, the implementation of rent-to-own schemes, and the allocation of plots for self-build projects.
These measures complement the ongoing investment under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), which includes the construction of 102 new homes. With these new actions, the municipal housing stock will increase from 230 to 332 units, a rise of 44.3%.
The council aims to offer various pathways for families, enabling them to build their own homes on municipal land or start by renting a property with the option to purchase it later. Diversifying housing options is seen as crucial to help households access the real estate market, encouraging young people to stay in the municipality and making it easier for workers to reside in Ponta Delgada.
The City Council believes that addressing the housing challenge requires continuous intervention, extending beyond projects funded by extraordinary funds. Strengthening its own investment, enhancing municipal assets, and creating new opportunities for housing construction and availability are key aspects of the work to be undertaken.
