The Strategy for Sustainability and Certification of the Azores Tourist Destination and the Installation of the Azores School of the Sea have been nominated for the final. The former competes in the Portugal + Smart category, while the latter competes in Portugal + Social. These projects are among the 30 initiatives recognized for their contribution to economic, social, and territorial development.
The tourism sustainability project has been consolidating the international positioning of the Azores as a benchmark in sustainable tourism. It has strengthened regional capacity building, promoted best practices aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, and supported the archipelago's certification as the world's first sustainable tourist destination.
Furthermore, the Azores School of the Sea, located in Horta, represents a strategic investment in qualifying human resources for the blue economy. This infrastructure aims to provide specialized and certified training in maritime professions, enhancing sectors such as fishing, maritime transport, and aquaculture.
The European Funds Awards, promoted by the European Funds Showcase, aim to distinguish projects financed by the European Union for their impact and innovation. The winners will be announced on November 5th. The Public Choice category will be decided by online voting.
